Postgraduate details and where to study
Bursary conditions
The bursary is available for study as a full-time student in either the MSc Exploration or Economic Geology courses, in the Department of Geology, Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa. The courses commence at the end of January each year and run for a minimum of 12 months. Students are required to be full-time in attendance for that period. Further particulars regarding the course programmes/costs are provided elsewhere.
The bursary covers assistance with travel costs to and from Rhodes University, meals and accommodation in post-graduate residence during the academic year, and course and field trip fees for the MSc programme.
Applicants are limited to African nationals, and successful candidates will be chosen on a merit basis. Preference will be given in the bursary scheme to candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds. Applications will be screened by a committee that includes the Director of the MSc programme (Professor John Moore) and an appointee of the Baring family trust.
Applicants should be in possession of a BSc Honours degree or equivalent in one of the geological sciences (geology, geochemistry, geophysics, geostatistics, etc.). They should provide an up-to-date curriculum vitae, certified copies of their degree certificate and results transcript and two professional referee’s letters of recommendation. Short-listed candidates may be required to provide an additional letter of motivation.
Successful applicants would be required to submit a report at the end of the course, detailing experience gained, accomplishments, etc. to the Baring family trust. There are no employment requirements, nor commitments attached to the award.
The closing date for applications for 2007 is 15th September 2006.
