Previous Scholars – the impact of the Scholarship

Comments from some of the Scholars…

”The Exploration geology course on offer at Rhodes is undoubtedly of high quality especially considering how industry oriented it is. Its structure makes useful not only to the exploration industry but in the operating mines as well. Having been through it I feel that my geological and exploration understanding have been tremendously broadened and I feel able to handle most of the challenges at all stages of exploration. Most of the things covered over the course of the year were interesting. The subjects studied included the magmatic deposits in the first module, hydrothermal deposits the second module, surface processes and evaluation in the third and fourth modules respectively. I was particularly fascinated to have visited the world’s largest layered intrusion (the Bushveld Complex) in the first module. I am proud to have been associated with the course. The course deserves support. Thanks.”  Wiscort Banda, 2004

’’I would like to emphasize that by being a recipient of the Baring Scholarship, I  have gained in many ways. Academically, my geological knowledge has vastly improved owing to the great depth and breadth of the course content, excellent teaching facilities and staff, and the numerous visits that were made to various mines and mineral occurrences. In addition, have also improved on my communication, inter-personal and social skills owing to the cosmopolitan nature of Rhodes University students’ enrolment. Last but not least, I have managed to secure employment with one of the world’s largest mining and exploration companies. I am very grateful and please keep it up.”  Owen Chingoboo, 2004

“I am forever in debt to the Julian Baring family for making my dreams to further my studies a reality. I have been given the responsibility to head a major JV exploration program, on the Zambia/Congo DRC border, between African Eagle Resources plc and Phelps Dodge. The whole experience at Rhodes has changed the way I look at life – I am more confident about technical discussion with any geologist from anywhere in the world. Most important is that my bank account has seen an increase of which if someone told me I would be getting this much some time back, I would have thought they are dreaming.” William Mumba, 2008

“My one year at Rhodes University has been very rewarding in refreshing my technical and research skills as well as to recharge my geology enthusiasm. It makes me feel good to know that I have expanded my knowledge and now I am sharing my practical experience with the exploration team here at Buckreef Project.” Sebastian Sylvester Ndile, 2008

“The Julian Baring Scholarship has changed my life for the greater good. From the day it was communicated to me that I was a beneficiary of the scholarship, through the day I entered the lecture room at Rhodes, to this day, things have never stopped to get better. In January 2008 I joined Lonmin. I am greatly indebted to the Julian Barring Scholarship for affording me this great opportunity to develop myself, which otherwise would have remained no more than just a dream.”  Wonai Mafuma, 2008
